Connecting the cities of Sumas in Washington and Abbotsford in British Columbia, the Sumas Abbotsford border crossing is one of several crossings from Washington State into BC. Located 43 miles east of Vancouver it can be reached using British Columbia Highway 11 in Canada or Washington State Route 9 in America. It is often the least crowded of all the other border crossings nearby, due to its less centralized location. Yes, it is possible to walk across the Sumas – Huntingdon Border on foot. You must still pass through border control and should head to the pedestrian entrance at the Customs and Immigration Building. Pedestrians will be asked the same questions as drivers when crossing the border and require the same ID.
The Sumas border crossing is toll-free and completely free to cross. Frequent travelers across the border can apply for a NEXUS card for $50. NEXUS is a trusted traveler program, and a NEXUS card will last for five years. It will give you access to priority lanes for faster crossing, and you will be pre-screened for travel by both Canada and the United States.
The Sumas border crossing is open 24 hours a day to pedestrians, cars, and trucks. NEXUS lanes are open between 7 am and 7 pm seven days a week.
Duty-free shopping is available on both sides of the Sumas – Huntingdon border. There is a Duty-Free Americas store located on the US side of the border, and Abbotsford Duty-Free on the Canadian side. ID requirements vary depending on the direction of travel. For travelers entering the US from Canada, you must present a valid travel document which denotes both US citizenship and identity. Canadian citizens over 16 can use a valid Canadian Passport or Enhanced Driving License to cross into the US. Foreign nationals must present a valid passport and visa.
