Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge Border Crossing Wait Times & FAQ’s
With the border of St Mary’s River, the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge is a border crossing connecting the United States with Canada. The bridge connects the cities of Sault Sainte Marie in Ontario with Sault Ste Marie in Michigan.
From 1865 there was been a ferry service connecting the two cities. However, when the bridge was completed in 1962, the ferry service ended. It is the only crossing for vehicles in Michigan and Ontario.
The International Bridge is the tenth busiest border crossing for passenger traffic. As a result, traffic is highest in the summer months. It is, however, quieter in winter.

It is not possible to walk across the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, other than if you are taking part in the annual bridge walk. If you do not have a vehicle, there is a bridge bus which can drop you off at either side of the bridge. The bus costs $2 (USD) for the general public and $1 for concessions.
You can also hail a cab to take you across the bridge. It is important to tell your cab driver your intentions as they will need their relevant ID to cross the border with you.
There is a toll on both sides of the bridge. For passenger vehicles, the fee is 4 USD or 5.30 CAD. RVs cost 6.50 USD or 8.70 CAD.

The Sault St. Marie International Bridge is open all year round and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It has four traffic lanes, two commercial lanes, and one bus lane.
There is a NEXUS lane available. The service into the United States runs from 7 am to 8 am on weekdays. The bridge is also FAST equipped complete with an enrolment center.
There is a Duty-Free Americas store at the bridge plaza which opens from 6 am until 11 pm, every day of the week. There is also a Sault Ste Marie Duty-Free shop in Canada. From May 16th until Canadian Thanksgiving, the store opens daily from 6 am until midnight. In the winter (after thanksgiving up to May 15th), the store is open from 7 am until 11 pm.
It is essential to present the necessary ID as you cross the border. This can be formal government-approved ID forms such as a passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s license or a NEXUS, FAST or SENTRI card.
US Military or Mariner documentation is also accepted. To travel into the United States, you’ll need an ID and a relevant visa.
