The Norton Stanhope border crossing connects the towns of Norton in Vermont with Stanhope in Quebec. It is the at the point where Quebec Route 147 and Vermont Route 147 meet and is the only border crossing that connects the two towns. Yes, pedestrians are able to cross the Norton – Stanhope border on foot. In addition to the manned border crossing which as dual Ports of Entry on Highway 114, there is actually a second unmanned crossing on nearby Nelson Road. It is one of very few remaining unmanned crossings left and is monitored closely with sensors and cameras. All travelers wishing to pass through this crossing must check-in at the Port of Entry beforehand.
There is no toll for crossing the Norton – Stanhope border, and it is free for all vehicle types. Unlike some other crossings on the US – Canada border, Norton – Stanhope have no lanes for NEXUS cardholders.
The Norton – Stanhope border crossing is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With no fast or NEXUS lanes available, and as it is the only crossing connecting the two towns, the Norton – Stanhope crossing can become very busy at times.
Duty-free shopping is available on the Canadian side of the Norton – Stanhope border crossing. A small duty-free shop can be found a short way from the border on the east side of the road. This is the Stanhope Duty-Free store which is only open between April and November, and opening times vary depending on the month.
Different types of documentation may be required to cross the border between the US and Canada depending on which direction you are traveling and where you are from. Basic ID requirements include a valid enhanced driver’s license for the driver of the vehicle, as well as vehicle registration details. All travelers will be required to show a valid passport and relevant visas to enter the US.
