Yes, it is possible to walk across the Sweetgrass-Coutts border. However, the area around the border is just open prairieland, so there is not a comfortable walking route or the amenities that you may wish for when walking across the border. This border crossing is also very busy with commercial and passenger traffic, so may not be a pleasant walk.
There is no bridge or tunnel at this border; it is just a location where the two main roads meet. As a result, there is no charge for the Sweetgrass-Coutts border crossing.
The crossing is open 24 hours a day and runs every day of the year. To keep traffic running smoothly, there are six northbound lanes.
There is a NEXUS lane available. NEXUS services into Canada run from 3 pm to 5 pm from Monday to Friday. This lane is closed during holidays. The service into the US runs seven days a week and is accepted in all lanes.
There is a duty-free shop on both sides of the border. In the States, there is a Duty-Free Americas store. This is located on 60 3rd Avenue, Sweetgrass. The store is open every day from 9 am until 7 pm. In Coutts, Canada there is the Coutts Duty-Free store at 126 1 Street W. This store is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm.
For a trip over 48 hours, you are allowed to bring duty-free goods worth up to 800 USD.

To cross the border, it is essential to have the right ID available. A passport is often the quickest solution. For Canadians traveling to the US, a NEXUS or FAST card is accepted. Border Control will also allow an enhanced driving license; however, they will not usually accept a standard driving license.
For people who are not US or Canadian citizens, they must be able to show the relevant visa or ESTA visa waiver, alongside their passport.
