Whirlpool Bridge (Niagra Falls) Wait Times & FAQ’s
The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge or Whirlpool Bridge as it is more commonly known has two decks and carries both trains and passenger vehicles across the border. Commercial vehicles and pedestrians cannot pass at the Whirlpool Bridge border crossing. The crossing is widely used by Buffalo residents.

You cannot currently walk across the bridge.
The bridge used to have a pedestrian crossing, but it was closed after 9/11. There have been calls to reopen the pedestrian walkway, so this may change in the future.
Pedestrians are not permitted to cross the bridge.
The crossing is reserved for NEXUS cardholders only.
For cars, the toll is $3.75 USD or $5.00 CAD.
The Whirlpool Bridge is open from 7 am to 11 pm. There are two lanes traveling in both directions. There are usually no queues, and often there is not even a need to stop.
There are no duty-free shopping centers located directly by the bridges.
For entry to Canada it is recommended that you have passport with you, and if required a valid visa.
US citizens entering Canada may also use the following as identification:
- NEXUS membership card
- FAST card
For entry into the US Canadian citizens will need one of:
- Canadian passport
- Enhanced drivers licence/enhanced identification card
- NEXUS membership card
- FAST/EXPRESS and SENTRI enrolment cards
Canadian citizens returning to Canada will need one of:
- NEXUS card
- FAST card
- Canadian emergency travel document
- Canadian temporary passport
- Certificate of Canadian citizenship issued after 1954
- Enhanced drivers license/enhanced identification card
US citizens returning to the US will need one of:
- Passport
- Passport card
- Enhanced drivers license
