Probably early than you would expect. The airport itself has previously issued press release before holidays that passengers should arrive for domestic flights at least two and half hours early and three hours for international flights to allow enough time for parking, checking luggage and TSA processing.

Austin Airport security wait times have been increasingly frustrating travelers and even causing missed flights. As is the case at DFW Airport, AUS throughput is recovering from the pandemic much faster than most airports with flight numbers even surpassing 2019 levels with the major carriers add new routes in late 2021 and into 2022. Staffing shortages have also contributed to longer security wait times at Austin Airport, so much so that mandatory overtime had been initiated for TSA agents to cover busy periods. To find out how busy Austin Airport is right now please view the estimated wait times above.

An additional checkpoint with 3 new TSA security lines was earmarked for the end of 2021 to ease congestion.

You can view which PreCheck lanes are currently open right now at ABIA airport and for any TSA delays using the table above. There are currently 3 checkpoints at the main terminal with a 4th arriving imminently. If you haven't already, signing up for TSA PreCheck will greatly reduce your AUS wait times. You can find out more and enrol here https://www.tsa.gov/precheck.
We don't have much detail on the experience of those passing through immigration but given the TSA wait times at Austin Airport for those departing and including staff shortages there's no reason to expect to get processed quickly. For those who have been screened at a connecting airport already the experience should be much quicker when getting through ABIA security. Have experiences of immigration at Austin Airport?
