The Pembina Emerson border crossing connects the community of Emerson in Manitoba with the city of Pembina in North Dakota. On the United States side, it is connected by Interstate 29 and US Route 81, and on the Canadian side is connected by Manitoba Highway 57. It is the second busiest crossing along the Canada – US border that is west of the Great Lakes. There is no law against crossing the Pembina – Emerson border by foot; however, it is not common at the particular crossing. The Pembina crossing is heavily used by trucks and commercial vehicles as opposed to pedestrians. In fact, it carries more truck traffic than every other crossing on North Dakota combined.
The crossing between Pembina and Emerson is toll-free. Regular travelers can obtain a five-year NEXUS card for $50 which will give fast access through the border. NEXUS cardholders can avoid the queues by using the dedicated fast lanes.
The Pembina – Emerson border crossing is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Traffic can be expected southbound on Mondays and Tuesdays as this is a common time for trucks traveling. Northbound becomes busy later in the week as the vehicles make their return journeys.
There are duty-free shops available on both sides of the Pembina – Emerson border. On the Canadian side, the Emerson Duty-Free Shop is open daily from 6 am to 6 pm. On the US side, there is a Duty-Free Americas store open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
